Site map

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

I’ve just created a site map – there’s a link at the bottom right of every page or you can find it directly at http://abcnotation.com/sitemap.

As you can see, the structure of the site is relatively simple with very few static pages. However, there thousands and thousands of virtual “[tune pages]“, all created dynamically as required. Plus, I guess there are billions of possible “[search results]” pages.

That’s a lot of pages!

Enjoy!

Software

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

I’ve just completely rewritten and updated the software page – inspired by an email from Bart Humphries – hopefully it should be a lot easier to understand now.

There are a few new programs there, including a couple for the iPhone.

Enjoy!

Good news

Monday, August 10th, 2009

I haven’t quite finished the server optimisation promised in my previous blog message (though it’s nearly done – just testing and refining now).

However, I have written a little website monitor utility which checks that the website is still up and, if not, restarts it.

So the good news is that if you encounter a 503 error message saying that the website has crashed, if all is well, it should be back up again within 10 minutes.

Even when I’m asleep!

Just back …

… from that wonderful institution of the UK folk scene, Sidmouth Folk Week.

Had an absolutely splendid time (despite the rain), although I was only there half the week.

Utterly exhausted now though, especially after Thursday’s marathon – did a concert with Meridian, dashed up to the Bulverton to play for the end of a dance workshop and then dashed back into town for a three and a half hour ceilidh with Climax at the Blackmore Gardens – ten hours of playing and / or soundchecks!

So what has this got to do with abc notation?

Well nothing much, apart from the fact that I met several people who had heard the radio programme (and had a quick chat with Johnny Adams who founded the Village Music Project and was also interviewed).

What surprised me most is the number of people who didn’t know about the programme but happened to have Radio 4 on at the time it went out. Loads of them!

Truly, Radio 4 is the voice of the people.

It’s amazing …

… the lengths people will go to in order to spam the website.

I have just deleted 51 messages from the forums, all promoting n*ke trainers in some way, all posted by the same user over the last couple of days.

Fortunately phpBB, the software that I use to run the forums, has that one covered – I was able to delete the user AND all their posts with one single click. Nice!

I’m guessing that the posts were generated and added automatically in some way and so (unfortunately) user lsx008881 probably didn’t spend hours composing and submitting them. Nonetheless, it was very satisfying to be able to delete the whole lot with very little effort (and without having to read them).

This blog is also getting a couple of spams a day – usually in the form of innocuous comments such as “that’s really interesting” or “great work”, but containing a signature which links to a website advertising viagra or something similar.

Fortunately, they are also easy to consign to the bit-bucket in the corner.

But it’s still a surprise that, since relaunching the website a month and a half ago, most of the learning curve has had to do with fending off website pirates, rather than improving it for people who are actually interested in abc notation.

Anyway … run out the guns … stand by to repel boarders …
