Rest below a note?

Postby raysa » Sat Jun 15, 2013 8:58 am

Is it possible to have a rest in vertical alignment with a note? I'm thinking of, say, a 3/4 bar with a dotted minim lasting the whole bar but then two crochets coming in at beat 2 and 3. You really need a crochet rest below the dotted minim, otherwise it looks like you're trying to get five beats into the 3/4 bar.
If I put the rest and the dotted minim together in square brackets like a chord, the rest doesn't appear.

Thanks, Ray

I've just worked out how you can do it by organising the tune into voices, but when only the occasional bar needs the treatment that seems a very cumbersome way to go about it.

Is there a way of achieving voice-splitting just within a bar without constructing the whole tune into voices when most bars will have the second voice empty?

Thanks, Ray
