How can I put words under a tune line rather than above (using"")?

Hi,

Use the "w:" field.

It's not universally available, but abcm2ps (and software that uses it, like AbcExplorer) make it quite easy.

There are thousands of examples in the tune search (just search for "w:") - one picked at random is

I'm using Abc Navigator 2. Should that show words,using the W: field?

If you are using quotes for comments rather than for chords, then the rules (briefly) are this.
"^comment" = above the stave
"_comment" = below
"<comment" = to left of note
">comment" = to right

W: (capital letter) is to show the lyrics verses after the music piece.
w: (small letter) is to align the syllables below the notes.
