Can asian characters (chinese) be used with abc notation, e.g. for the title, lyrics? Chinese characters in the abc file comes out as '???'

I've specified charset as utf-8 in my headers:

Code: Select all

I:abc-charset utf-8

but that didn't seem to help.

Have looked through the chinese music collection at, and they're all in pinyin. Was wondering if asian characters is supported.

Thanks in advance.

I think that utf-8 is not supported by all abc programs

runabc program at :
seems to have a complete utf-8 support, and displays simplified and traditional Chinese, etc.

I checked it by copy and paste of Chinese characters taken with Firefox browser on the
and runabc was able to display them in the list of songs and internal editor.

However,I don't know how to type/input these characters without using the copy and paste method, from a text typed in another editor with full utf-8 editing support.

Have downloaded and tried runabc.exe, still couldn't get chinese characters to show correctly.

I've also tried running abcm2ps from the command line, and the generated ps file doesn't show chinese characters.

I've attached screenshots of runabc for reference:

Chinese characters shows correctly in the editor, but not on the summary window.

I'm getting '???' for chinese characters in the generated ps file. Could it be a problem with windows itself? Do I need to specify the font or anything? Any ideas?

If I have well understood comments in the development version of abcm2ps archive at
this new version handles chinese characters with pango library.
A test file with chinese characters is in this archive.

I was unable to compile this program with pango on my linux system because of missing libraries.
The .deb file do not worked because I am on amd64. gives a link to this development version on Windows
UNFORTUNATELY with comment "development release for Windows - no Pango support, sorry."

Perhaps in some months ....
