ABC Software and Windows 7

Postby Oonrahnjay » Fri Apr 23, 2010 9:36 am

OK, had to buy a new laptop and it came with Windows 7. I've enjoyed using ABC2Win for a long time but the two apparently don't like each other. I've been in touch with Jim Vint but it doesn't appear that there's anything I can do to run ABC2Win on my new computer.
Any suggestions? (I'm thinking new software or a way to run "old Windows" so I can stay with ABC2Win.)

I'd give ABCexplorer a try - it's very easy to set up and use.

Great suggestion! Thanks! I really like the way that ABCexplorer works and the functions are quick and easy to use. However, when I hit play, it usually plays the "A" part until it gets to "first ending" ( as "|1 ") and plays part of the notes in that measure; then it plays about 6-8 notes in the "B" part and stops. Is there a problem with the setup, or a way around this?

Thanks, B Henderson, NC USA

I haven't had any trouble at all with abc and Windows 7. The one thing to check is whether or not everyting that is needed is in the PATH statement. Another glitch that I ran into with one of the new abc software GUIs is that the wrong version ghost script was on my computer (too new--however, fixing the software's search path did the trick). But--the command line programs never were a problem--as a matter of fact, they work when some of the non-command line programs were giving me fits (still true of one of them--regarding slightly complicated guitar chords--just a "text" entry, at that).

I might add that the command line pgm. I'm using on Windows 7 is abcm2ps.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I'm having problems with Windows 7.

I use ABC Explorer (running XP) and I've been trying to install this on a friend's PC which usesWindows 7, but it won't run. Does anyone please have any suggestions (i (in plain English please :) )how to get to work? Alternatively, what other ABC programs will run under Windows 7?
