N:Spavinaw (pop,. 437) is a town in Mayes County, Oklahoma, birthplace of
N:Mickey Mantle, and once part of the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. Later, the
N:wealthiest citizens of Tulsa built summer homes and clubs in Spavinaw. Boat races
N:and water shows were staged on the scenic lake. Spavinaw became notorious as
N:a wild town, boasting wide-open saloons.
